The
fourth of July is a favorite time of year for children of all ages and the
Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department urges you to celebrate our countries
independence with your family and friends, but be exceedingly fire safe
and especially mindful of the severe drought
conditions that exist in our area. Due to decreased rainfall, high
temperatures and high wind conditions, we are at an extremely high risk
for wild fires. Please be careful around vegetation, particularly
next to buildings and homes and have extinguishing resources available in
case of fire. Have a fire safe and wonderful 4th of July
celebration, get the family out and see this years show, it promises again
to be spectacular!
The Ogallala Vol.
Fire Department offers the following fireworks safety tips:
n
Purchase your fireworks from
a reliable source.
n
Always read and follow the
label directions.
n
Have an adult present.
n
Use outdoors only.
n
Always have water close by
(a garden hose or bucket).
n
Never experiment or make
your own fireworks.
n
Light only one firework at a
time.
n
Never re-light a "dud"
firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes then soak it in a bucket of water).
n
Never give fireworks to
small children.
n
Dispose of fireworks
properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in your
trashcan.
n
Never throw or point
fireworks at other people.
n
Never carry fireworks in
your pocket.
n
Never shoot fireworks in
metal or glass containers.
n
The shooter should always
wear eye protection and never have any part of their body over the
firework.
n
Stay away from illegal
explosives.
